The aim of the Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering is the training of technicians with university preparation, able to understand and follow innovation by adapting to scientific and technological evolution.
Therefore, it aims to provide a good basic education, a wide-ranging engineering preparation and a professional competence that, through the knowledge of the basic techniques and tools for the integrated approach to concepts concerning the mechanics of solids and structures, hydraulics, hydrology, geotechnics and the survey and testing of structures and infrastructures, is aimed at solving engineering problems in the field of civil and environmental design.
The skills achieved must also be able to adapt to scenarios of evolution of methods, techniques, tools and technologies.
Cultural motivations, specific educational objectives, and employment prospects
The aim of the Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering is the training of technicians with university preparation, able to understand and follow innovation by adapting to scientific and technological evolution. Therefore, it aims to provide a good basic education, a wide-ranging engineering preparation and a professional competence that, through the knowledge of the basic techniques and tools for the integrated approach to concepts concerning:
- the mechanics of solids and structures, hydraulics, hydrology, geotechnics and the surveying and testing of structures and infrastructures (Civil Pathway),
- soil protection, eco-compatible management of natural and anthropic resources, sustainable use of the territory, prevention and control of pollution phenomena (Environmental Path), is aimed at solving engineering problems in civil and environmental design.
The skills achieved must also be able to adapt to scenarios of evolution of methods, techniques, tools and technologies. The achievement of these objectives is pursued through an educational activity divided into teaching modules, which include classroom lectures, laboratory exercises and individual study or exercise and that give rise to credits that the student achieves through the passing of examinations. The educational activity aims to provide the graduate in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a good basic training (in the first year), a broad spectrum engineering preparation (in the second year) and a preparation oriented to the specific civil or environmental sector (in the third year).
In particular, its training path provides:
- an adequate knowledge of the tools of mathematics and other basic sciences so as to be able to use them to interpret and describe the problems of Civil and Environmental Engineering;
- a basic methodological and technological preparation accompanied by a solid culture in some of the disciplines traditionally characterizing the field of Civil and Environmental Engineering, such as design, science and technology of construction, hydraulics, geotechnics, topography, principles of environmental chemical engineering, land use planning;
- an in-depth knowledge of the methodological and operational aspects of the fundamental sciences of Civil and Environmental Engineering in order to acquire the ability to identify, formulate and solve the most frequent problems of current technology;
- a complementary part aimed at the knowledge of further contents freely chosen and of the foreign language.
In function of the multiple activities that are developing after the seismic events that have hit our territory (surveys, investigations on the state of damage, investigations for the analysis of the local seismic response, management of rubble, project of interventions, etc.), it is given faculty to the teachers of the courses that have relevance with them to carry out beside the traditional classroom teaching, also activities on the field related to the seismic event, for a commitment up to a third of the duration of the course (e.g. up to 3 CFU for a 9 CFU course).
It is believed that the training activities should exclude those related to design functions with innovation, those of research, those more purely managerial, especially if related to complex systems of large size and / or high technological level.
The main occupational outlets envisaged for graduates in Civil and Environmental Engineering are:
- civil engineering area: construction and maintenance companies of civil works, plants and infrastructures; professional offices and design companies of works, plants and infrastructures; public offices of design, management and control of urban and territorial systems; companies, entities, consortia and agencies of management and control of systems of works and services; service companies for the feasibility study of the urban and territorial impact of infrastructures;
- area of environmental and territorial engineering: companies, public and private entities and professional firms for the design, planning, implementation and management of works and systems of control and monitoring of the environment and territory, soil protection, waste management, raw materials and environmental resources, geological and energy and for the assessment of impacts and environmental compatibility of plans and works;
- area of safety engineering and civil, environmental and territorial protection: large infrastructures, construction sites, workplaces, industrial environments, local authorities, public and private bodies in which to develop prevention and safety management activities and in which to cover the responsibility profiles provided by the current legislation for the verification of safety conditions (laws 494/96, 626/94, 195/03, 818/84, UNI 10459).
